Nestled conveniently opposite Merrylands train station, Shamama Restaurant stands as an authentic Afghan culinary gem that warmly invites you to explore the rich flavors of Afghan cuisine. This humble eatery, located at 2/130 Merrylands Rd, Merrylands NSW, is a treasure for anyone seeking hearty, soul-satisfying meals crafted with care and tradition.

From the moment you step inside Shamama, you’re greeted with a cozy, intimate atmosphere that perfectly complements the genuine warmth of its staff. While the space is modest, the friendly service and inviting ambiance make every visit comfortably memorable. It’s clear from the vibrant chatter and satisfied smiles that this is a beloved spot for both locals and newcomers alike.

The menu showcases a delicious variety of Afghan classics, with standout dishes that celebrate rich, aromatic spices and tender, marinated meats that effortlessly melt in your mouth. Reviewers have raved about mouthwatering specialties like Kalepache — a traditional breakfast treat served with freshly baked bread that is still warm from the oven, evoking a comforting sense of home. The bread itself is a highlight, boasting a fresh, slightly crisp exterior that pairs beautifully with the rich, flavorsome main dishes.

Many patrons, including first-timers, note the generous portion sizes here, which are commendable especially when compared to shrinking servings in nearby eateries. Whether it’s a succulent lamb, perfectly spiced kebabs, or hearty stews, each plate is a celebration of flavor and texture — robust, savory, and deeply satisfying. The ability to customize spice levels adds a personalized touch, ensuring that the food appeals to a broad spectrum of palates.

Beyond the food, Shamama offers little extras that truly enhance the experience: complimentary tea served with kindness, fresh hot meals presented promptly, and an overall welcoming vibe that makes you feel like more than just a customer. While some have noted the lack of onsite restroom facilities, the proximity to the train station easily offsets this minor inconvenience for most.

In essence, Shamama Restaurant is more than just a place to eat — it’s a destination for those craving authentic, lovingly prepared Afghan cuisine in a relaxed and unpretentious setting. Whether you’re bringing friends unfamiliar with Afghan food or are a devoted repeat visitor, Shamama promises a reliable, flavorful, and heartfelt dining experience in the heart of Merrylands.

I took a few non-Afghans friends here and they absolutely loved it. They loved the food, the service and the atmosphere is great for what they have. Cant a lot with a small space. The food was delicious, meat was soft and marinated well, the portions are very generous, especially considering how other restaurants in the area have changed their portions but still charge a lot. Will definitely go back and friends are asking me when I can take them.

Such a lovely place and friendly staff. We had Kalepache as breakfast there and it was amazing. Specially the bread that they bake at a same time. You can also have tea for free there Highly recommended

Amazing experience!! I have come here many times and tried different items from the menu. They have never disappointed me. The location is very convenient. It is just opposite to Merrylands train station. The pricing is very reasonable. The stuffs are very friendly. Highly recommended!!

Very good value for its price. Food is always hot, fresh and delicious. Definitely a must try!

Restaurant Review: Shamama Restaurant, Merrylands – A Humble Afghan Gem Today, I had the pleasure of revisiting Shamama Restaurant in Merrylands, and once again, it proved to be a sanctuary of comfort and flavor in the midst of a busy day. After spending the morning immersed in Life Skills and Bible Study programs at St Luke’s Liverpool—a wonderfully inclusive church for all people—I made my way to Liverpool Library to finalize some reporting for my leadership team. By the time I was done, hunger was calling. As someone who practices intermittent fasting, I’m always mindful of my food choices, especially when I’m craving something comforting yet wholesome. My mind immediately lit up at the thought of Borani Banjan, a dish I’ve savored alone at Shamama many times before, and I knew exactly where I needed to go. The journey to Merrylands was eventful, to say the least. After journaling on the train, I found myself stepping in to break up a street fight upon arrival—hardly the prelude I’d envisioned for a relaxing meal. But once I stepped into Shamama Restaurant, the chaos of the day melted away. The humble, traditional Afghan dining experience here is nothing short of a masterpiece, and it’s all thanks to the warmth and skill of proprietors Achraf Rahimin, a master baker, and Yonus Rezaie. They have created a space that feels like a home away from home, and their passion for their craft shines through in every dish. As I settled in, I was pleasantly surprised when the staff brought out a complimentary yellow soup, brimming with tender chicken and hearty chickpeas. It was a delightful, unexpected start—rich, warming, and absolutely delicious. But the star of the show, as always, was my beloved Borani Banjan. Priced at just $15, this dish comes with freshly baked bread and a variety of accompaniments, making it a complete and satisfying meal. The Borani Banjan itself—a heavenly combination of eggplant, tomatoes, yogurt, and spices—was as comforting and flavorful as I remembered, with each bite transporting me to a place of pure contentment. The bread, undoubtedly crafted by the skilled hands of Achraf, was the perfect vehicle for soaking up every last drop of the dish’s vibrant sauce. What makes Shamama truly special is its unpretentious charm. This is not a place that tries to dazzle with flashy décor or gimmicks; instead, it wins you over with its authenticity, generosity, and soul-warming food. The entire experience, including the 10- to 15-minute train ride to Merrylands, is worth every moment—and every penny. At under $20, including change, it’s a steal for the quality and heart that goes into the meal. Shamama Restaurant is a shining gem in the west of Sydney, and I can’t recommend it highly enough. For anyone seeking a humble, traditional Afghan dining experience that nourishes both body and soul, this is the place to go. To Achraf, Yonus, and the entire team—thank you, my brothers, for another unforgettable meal. Rating: 11 out of 10 – perfection, with extra heart.

Amazing food, a must visit place. Only thing is this place has no restrooms and I had to use train station one.

Went friday lunch time and they had great food with generous portions. Their bread was delicious and drinks are served in large portions. Customer service was good and friendly as the lady told us we could edit how spicy we wanted the food. Setting was average and my fork was a little dirty.
